Fluency

Fluency is something we are focusing on in our classrooms this year. We talk to our students about trying to read out loud as if they are speaking. We also tell them that reading a story more than once is important and should help them sound more fluent when they read. To help us with this goal we created Fry Fluency Cards that we hung in our classrooms.

Fry Phrases 1-250.

Students start by reading Phase #1 to you and then move up from there. When they have extra time they are able to practice the specific phase they are on. Our students really enjoy challenging themselves so it works out nicely.
These are the Fry Phrases 1-125.
Check out our TPT store for more Fry resources!

We Are All Scientists

We read the book What Is a Scientist? by Barbara Lehn and then talked about all the great science vocabulary. After that, the kids drew pictures of themselves and we hung them on the bulletin board along with the vocabulary words we discussed.

We made sure to have the kids draw them exactly how they were dressed that day because the point of this project is to show kids that everyone is a Scientist; not just the people who dress up in lab coats and make potions. This project started out as a cute poster by Mrs. Kimbrells Kindergarten and then we decided to make a class project out of it.

Oh the Joy of Bathroom Passes!

We all know that kids think they need to use the restroom at least 20 times a day! And then we all hope that they washed their hands, right. Well, problem solved. Bathroom passes on hand sanitizer. We have the kids put the sanitizer on their desk when they leave the room and then return it to its designated area when they come back. We only have 1 pass for girls and 1 for boys, that way we know where our kids are. It works great and then we know our kids have clean hands.

First Day of School Activity

NO David!! By: David Shannon

This is an activity we used the first day of school. This is a great way to introduce rules and expectations. We started by reading any of the David books and jotting down ways David was getting into trouble in his classroom. Then, as a class, we turned all of those behaviors into positive classroom rules. After we brainstormed those ideas, all of the kids got a chance to create their own David characters and wrote a classroom rule in their speech bubbles. (We found this great idea from Nancy at First Grade W.O.W.  )  The final step of this project was to post the classroom rules around your classroom. (These rule posters are available in chevron or polka dots at our TPT store.)
